what is an NHS Charity?

NHS Charities are the legal way the NHS health boards can raise and distribute charitable funds for hospitals and health services. There are over 230 NHS charities across the UK and The Difference is the official charity of NHS Borders.

NHS Charities provide extra care and support for NHS patients and staff, enabling health services to do more. We enhance what is already available, we do not substitute for core provision but instead provide additional support that prevents ill health and improves services for patients and staff.

Take a look at the below email from NHS Charities Together, of which The Difference is a member.

Who is The difference?

The Difference is the official charity of NHS Borders. ‘The Difference’ is the official known as name for ‘Borders Health Board Endowment Funds’. We are registered with OSCR under the registered charity number SC008225. We are the only charity that supports all of NHS Borders’ work, all its staff and all the patients and families it cares for.

Money gifted to our charity, called the difference, does just what that name suggests, it makes “the difference”, it enhances the services and support given to patients and to staff, it adds real value to the work of NHS Borders.
— Karen Hamilton, Chair

making the difference

The difference exists to enhance patient care in the Scottish Borders. We work in close partnership with healthcare colleagues across the full spectrum of hospital and community activity to identify projects that will help local doctors, nurses and other clinicians enhance the care which they provide.

Your generous donations and wonderful fundraising enable us to enhance patient care & experience, improve patient environments and facilities, implement clinical innovations, provide additional staff training and development and of course look after the incredible staff of NHS Borders through wellbeing initiatives.
