Borders Macmillan Centre

Our cancer ward at Borders General Hospital is known as the
Borders Macmillan Centre as it has been fortunate enough to have received generous support from Macmillan Cancer Support in the past but making a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support does not necessarily go to these local services. We know the distinction can be confusing so we have pulled together these FAQs, not to influence your decision in any way but to ensure you are equipped with the facts in orders to make an informed decision about where your money goes.

  • Borders Macmillan Centre is the name of the cancer ward at Borders General Hospital.

It has received funding from Macmillan Cancer Support in the past and so carries its name in their ward title.

  • Macmillan Cancer Support is a wonderful national charity who help people with cancer get the best care the UK has to offer, whoever and wherever they are.

They have supported many staff and various projects in the Borders Macmillan Centre over a number of years.

Most recently they co-funded the refurbishment of the Borders Macmillan Centre with us.

  • The Difference is the official charity of NHS Borders and we support patient care across the full breadth of NHS Borders’ services.

This includes supporting Borders Macmillan Centre in the BGH.

  • NHS Borders funds the day to day running of the Borders Macmillan Centre including the staffing and upkeep of the ward.

Macmillan Cancer Support have, over the years, provided grants to the ward for various things and continue to support staff with training. It is a condition of these grants that wards and staff carry the Macmillan name even after the financial support has come to an end.

  • Macmillan Cancer Support is a national charity and when you donate to them you are donating to the work of the charity.

They then award funding to support projects and cancer staff across the UK. The Borders Macmillan Centre has been fortunate enough to have been supported by Macmillan Cancer Support in this way in the past.

  • If you want to support cancer care locally, including the Borders Macmillan Centre then The Difference, the official charity of NHS Borders, is the appropriate avenue for this.

When we receive donations where the wish is to support cancer care, we use those donations in ways that support cancer patients exclusively in the Scottish Borders.

This may include enhancements to the Borders Macmillan Centre environment, new equipment, enhancements to treatment, recovery, support, patient transport or to support the training and development of staff providing cancer care.

  • If you held a Macmillan Coffee Morning or any type of fundraising event in Macmillans name, that used the green Macmillan Logo to promote it, then it is likely that your supporters will expect the money raised to go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

We are an entirely separate charity and cannot accept donations on their behalf. Please follow this link to find out how you can make your gift directly to them. Donate to Macmillan Cancer Support | Macmillan Cancer Support

  • Please feel free to contact us. We know it can be confusing so we are happy to explain it further for you.

We are not here to persuade you to give to us rather than Macmillan Cancer Support but want to ensure you are able to make an informed choice about where you want your money to go.
