Small Mirrors, Big Impact: A Simple Tool to Help Prevent Pressure Ulcers

We’re proud to support a Quality Improvement initiative at NHS Borders that’s already making a meaningful difference in patient care: the introduction of pocket mirrors to assess and prevent a serious painful condition.

As part of her role, Quality Improvement Facilitator Zoe looks for ways to improve how care is given so patients are safer and have a more positive experience in hospital.  In conversations with staff, she learned that some areas are more difficult than others to check as they are often out of view such as heels, hips and backs. Small, retractable mirrors are a simple and effective way to check these areas with dignity and respect. This small addition supports early detection of skin issues and encourages timely reporting which is key to preventing complications.

“The mirror is on a retractable lanyard, so staff can just pull it out and easily check the patient without contorting themselves into all sorts of positions.”
— Zoe

The initiative helps staff provide more personalised care. It’s a small investment that’s already proving its value. We’re grateful for the support that made this project possible, and supporting NHS Borders’ commitment to improving safety, dignity, and wellbeing for every patient.
